The only reason as to how they’ve kept their bloodline so pure throughout the centuries is through a system of arranged marriages with other pureblood families while avoiding incest. And he was no exception. He was their only son and the only real heir to the Astor name and fortune. When he was seven, his family arranged a marriage with the Livingston family, particular to one Pearl Livingston. [/style]When he was growing up, his grandfather, who held strong purist ideals (while his parents did not), exerted considerable influence over the growing Astor, going as far as to teach him the Unforgivables over the years. This also had the side effect of Devin adopting his grandfather’s purist ideals. He was a Slytherin during his years as a Hogwarts student. He was a rather unsavory fellow to say the least. He was a potent and very aggressive duelist and had clear strengths in Potions and Herbology. He went on to achieve an O average in his OWLs and NEWTs. He threw his noble status around and often treated anyone who wasn’t a pureblood pretty poorly. He also demonstrated his lack of respect for authority figures by openly defying professors and such. Although he treated his future fiancé with kindness and respect, he didn’t really pay much attention to her (and whatever attention there was had mostly been focus on her body), instead surrounding himself with many Slytherin girls. To many who knew him then, seeing him now comes as something much more than a surprise. However, that Devin is long gone. Shortly after graduating from Hogwarts, he suddenly disappeared. There was no finding him, and there was no contact between him, his family, or his fiancé’s family. He had quite literally, vanished. What had actually happened though was that he had been kidnapped by a gang of Russian wizards looking to get money off of the ransom, knowing of the wealth and influence the Astors held within the wizarding world. They had all apparated in the middle of Sibera. Though in the ensuing chaos, he had leveled a part of the forest he was in with a Reductor Curse as well as all but one of his captors. The remaining kidnapper, in a panic, casted a spell with the first words that came out of his mouth, “Obliviate.” In an amnesia-induced stupor, Devin wandered the Siberian wilderness. With no recollection of his past or pretty much most of the advanced abilities he learned as a student, like Apparition, he was essentially doomed to remain trapped in the remote wilderness, unable to Apparate his way home. A few days had passed until he eventually came upon a small Muggle village, seemingly well out of the way of civilization, either Muggle or magical. Starving and dehydrated, he collapsed at the entrance. One of the villagers, Pyotr had taken the nearly dead wizard in, where his wife tended to his condition and nursed him back to health. Despite his memory handicap, Devin knew that they were Muggles, and kept his wand hidden from their sight. Not knowing his name, his rescuers decided to name him Sergei. Days turned into months as Devin settled into the village. The obvious language barrier between him and everyone else was eventually remedied, as Pyotr was a former member of Spetsnaz GRU and was fluent in many languages. Without any recollection of his past, Devin grew accustomed to living out in Siberia, and was seemingly satisfied. Months turned into years. The once thin and pampered Devin had turned muscular and accustomed to the rigors of life far from civilization. By now he was fluent in Russian, and even picked up French, German, Italian, and Spanish. He was accepted as part of the village and had even fallen in love with Pyotr’s daughter, Elena. The two were inseparable and were the talk of the village when news started spreading. He re-revealed his knack with Potions and Herbology when he used several plants unique to that area to craft potent potions that healed many of the sick in the village. Through this, he garnered a reputation as the village’s doctor. This nice life Devin had found himself was about to make a sudden turn. One night during an especially frigid winter under a full moon, the village was under attack. Not knowing what it was, he joined Pyotr and the others to take on their assailant. With an ax in hand, he located the mysterious attacker. In the dimly lit nightscape, the attacker had killed several men before turning its attention on Devin. It pounced, revealing itself as a large and unusual-looking wolf. Its fangs went straight towards his throat, but Devin had managed to hold it at bay. But the wolf had gained the upper hand quickly by overpowering him, sinking its fangs into his arm and clawing his face. He surely would have been killed had it not been for Pyotr, who ended up completely decapitating it with a powerful swing of his ax. The full consequences of his encounter with that wolf would not reveal themselves until a month later, when his first transformation occurred. He realized that the wolf that had attacked him was actually a werewolf. Confused and in great pain, he fled far from the village, transforming into a full werewolf and running wild for that night. He didn’t return until the morning after, freezing cold and in bad shape. It was around this time that the effects of the Memory Charm started to wear of and he slowly began to regain his memories. Following his first transformation, Devin kept it a secret from everyone else, and prepared accordingly for his subsequent transformations. As his memories returned, he grew increasingly conflicted over what to do. He remembered his life before the attempted kidnapping, remembering his purist ideals. His old memories clashed with his new. He had been living with Muggles all these years, the people he despised along with all halfbloods. But his bond with the villagers and with Elena taught him that they were not much different from magicfolk aside from the obvious inability to use magic or perceive the magic world. He eventually worked up the courage to let Elena know him being a wizard. Very much to his surprise, she told him she already knew, having believed that there was something magical about him when he managed to cure the sick in the village. She had gone on further to tell him that although she loved him and would want nothing more than for him to stay, he should make the decisions that he believed were best for him, and that she would support them. Taken aback at her understanding, Devin eventually decided to remain in the village. His decision to remain would not last however, as several wizards from the closest wizarding village had been tracking a werewolf that had attacked the village two years ago, not wanting the thought of a werewolf running around without being dealt with. Although that werewolf had been long dead, they found its victim, Devin, and sought to eliminate him by any means necessary. They planned a raid on the village on the night of the full moon, when Devin’s next transformation was set. Under the influence of the Wolfsbane potion, he retained his humanity when he transformed. Unable to use magic and unable to defend himself from the group of wizards, he still tried to defend the village, keeping his wand on him even though he couldn’t use it. It didn’t take long for him to become overwhelmed by the three wizards. In the ensuing chaos, the men in the village rushed to try and take down their attackers. Devin found himself dragged away by Elena, who shouted at him to run and get away as far as he could, ignoring any sort of protests he made. Devin listened to her, and ran as fast as he could, but not before watching her life get taken by a Killing Curse and the entire village being set ablaze. Devin was able to outrun his attackers, losing them by covering his tracks with his tail as he ran. Upon transforming back into human form, he did not Disapparate from the area and head back to England. Instead, he continued to wander, overcome by grief and anger at the loss of those he cared for. His decision had been made for him the night before. But he did not want to leave the land he had called home for the past eight and a half years. He spent the next one and a half years just wandering through the wilderness, always westward. It was during this time he reflected on his years spent in that village, and evaluated his life before that. The pain of losing everyone there was great enough for him to seriously consider suicide several times just to join them in the afterlife, but he reasoned that none of them would have wanted that. The long time he had to think to himself had made him wiser, as he came to understand and accept their deaths. Despite this, he still bore the scars of his experiences, both physical and mental. Eventually, he had enough, and returned to life in the UK. All this time everyone had believed him to be dead. He used this to his advantage, laying low for a few months before making the decision to return to his family. They were overjoyed at the fact their only son was alive this whole time, welcomed him back with open arms. His grandfather, and the only link he had to his purist ideals, had passed away three years before his return. Upon finding out that he was now a werewolf; his relations with his family were strained. Although they are slowly coming to terms with it, the situation with them is tense, but not hopeless. Given more time, they will come to fully accept it. Devin eventually decided to take up a teaching job at Hogwarts, taking up the post of Herbology professor. He reenters his old school as a completely changed man. Devin learned Mermish during his time in Siberia, as there was a very large lake nearby where he had gathered a few vital potion ingredients. Not wanting to disturb the indigenous Merfolk population by possibly trespassing on their land, he built up a friendly relationship with him over time, and had picked up their language. From his encounter with the werewolf, he has a large and noticeable scar on his right arm from the strong bite, and keeps it wrapped in bandages so no one can see (with the exception of Pearl). He also has a scar over his left eye. He grows a stash of marijuana. Half of it is for Damien Li-fen and half of it he keeps to himself for recreational use. As a result of his encounter with the werewolf, Devin spent quite a few years missing his left eye. It wasn't until he came back that his family hooked him up with a magical eye, which allows him to see through pretty much anything, even the back of his own head. The eye itself is physically indistinguishable from his right. The only way someone can tell it's a magical eye is when it starts moving independently from his right, which he does well to refrain from doing. Devin, during his years in Sibera, learned Systema from Pyotr. His proficiency in the martial art is high enough that he can go toe-to-toe with most Li-fens, despite lacking their fanaticism and bloodlust. He was also conditioned in the same manner as he was, able to withstand sickening amounts of pain and torture, which comes in handy when he deals with his transformations. Devin is also proficient in the use of several weapons, most notably knives and axes. However, he only uses it when someone is in immediate danger. CODED BY KIMCHI FOR SPELLBOUND ONLY |
