Truth be told, her parents have been in jail for their dealings in the drug trade since she was a baby – but that’s never really bothered Layla, as she was usually looked after by her crazy grandmother anyway (and was later sent to live in an orphanage). Granny Jones. Squib. Not only that, but a Squib who was the shame of a prestigious Romanian Pureblood family and disowned because of her lack of magical abilities. Even if she had been born magical, Granny Jones would have still disappointed her family by lacking their claim to fame: their abilities as seers. However, while Granny jones missed out on what her ex-family was famous for, the abilities of a seer have passed down to one of her grandchildren. Yup. Layla. [/style]Having mostly grown up in the care of her grandmother (until Granny Jones passed away when Layla was eight), Layla is no stranger to magic. Of course, as a child, she was well aware that she could perform magic and even confided in her grandmother about the “future dreams” she had. Granny Jones, although she was still bitter about her own family, didn’t have anything against wizards and witches in general and happily told Layla all she knew about magic. Which was a bit more than your basic knowledge; Granny Jones had been drilled in the theory of magic ever since she could understand speech, and even when her letter of acceptance never came, her parents still spent a good year trying to home-school herself in the vain hope that their daughter was a late-bloomer. Granny Jones definitely knew her fair bit about magic. But back to Layla. Her grandmother died when she was eight. Her parents were already in jail. Layla didn’t have any other living relatives that she knew of. The social worker in charge of her was lazy and bad at her job. Instead of getting placed into a foster home, Layla ended up in an orphanage despite technically not being an orphan. Layla hated the orphanage. Her hate grows for it every passing year. But, despite how horrible it is having to live in that place, it is her time at the orphanage that helped Layla become her own person. Thanks to the orphanage she found her love of escapism, animanga, fashion, fun and her bad habit of theft. Layla read her first manga when she borrowed one from the girl she shared a room with, and has been hooked on it ever since. She’s read every single volume of manga in the closest library at least five times. She even makes trips to further out libraries when she has enough bus money. Whatever she borrows from the library, she shares with her roommate, and her roommate does the same. Together they begged the head nun to buy a dvd player so that they could watch anime. The nun said no of course, but Layla and her roommate are still trying to wear her down. =w= Naturally, Layla’s adoration of manga and anime (although she never gets to watch anime ‘cause the orphanage doesn’t even have a tv sobsob) has led to a predictable worship of Japanese pop culture. She is obsessed in particular with the fashions there, particularly the Unfortunately, having to live in an orphanage usually means that you have no money. Every month the nuns gave Layla and the other children around ten quid each to last them. And Layla wanted more than 20 quid in order to follow the ganguro fashion, as well as fashion in general. It started off when she was ten, in a little pound and a penny shop – Layla stole a pair of earrings, hiding them in her pocket before walking out of the shop. The shopkeeper was a lazy bugger who was too busy watching something on his tv to notice. Maybe if he had caught her that first time, Layla’s habit of shoplifting would have never developed. But she hadn’t gotten caught, and her habit grew stronger every time she got away with it. Layla has only been caught once, when she done something very stupid, and the nuns stripped her of the one thing she stole and repeatedly apologised until the shop owner accepted it and left. Luckily, the police hadn’t needed to get involved, but Layla received one hell of a scolding and punishment. All it did though was make her more careful with her theft. The invitation to attend Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry came as no surprise to Layla. Thanks to her squib grandmother, she was well aware that she was a witch, a seer, and was going to have to attend a magical school by the time she was eleven. The ones who initially got quite the surprise were the nuns who ran the orphanage – but they quickly decided to ignore it. Layla was just going to a unique school. That was all. As long as Layla didn’t use her magic (which she isn’t allowed to anyway duh) or promote witchcraft among the orphans, she was still allowed to come back to the orphanage whenever she wanted~ Just a warning, in case you didn’t pick it up already, if Layla sees something and she wants it, she’ll get it. Like a Kea (or a Magpie) she is particularly attracted to shiny things, and has a sizeable hoard of jewellery in her jewellery box. However, she is also prone to… liberating people of any pretty thing – or person. Yup, if Layla sees someone she wants, she’ll get him/her. Not that she’ll really do anything with the person, of course. It’s the thrill of the chase she’s after. And she is twelve, so she’s not really looking for much more than a quick, cute little kiss anyway. By the way, although she denies that she looks like one, she does act a bit like a chav and certainly talks like one. She’s one of the students who’ll sit in the back of the class, chatting away to another student, completely ignoring the professor – and when the professor does finally interrupt her, if the interruption has annoyed her Also professors, if your class is even the tiniest hint boring, Layla won’t even try. She only tries at subjects that interest her – and if they really interest her, she does pretty well. Like with the above example of her learning the colour-changing spell for her hair: if she really wants to learn it, she’ll work at it and at it until she has it down perfectly. Oh right. I suppose that I’d better tell you about the whole seer thing… well, there’s not much to tell to be honest. Layla is perfectly aware that she is one, but she hasn’t told anyone and even forgets herself sometimes. After having a vision, her first thought is something along the lines of “Oh yeah, I forgot that happens.” Her seer abilities take a backseat to everything else in her life, and when she does use them, it’s only for her own personal gain. What a shame she can’t choose when her visions come or what they’re about. Seriously, she’s already tried to predict numerous things like test answers and lottery numbers, but has failed to induce a vision each and every time. So until she’s able to take Divination and learn how to actually use her powers CODED BY KIMCHI FOR SPELLBOUND ONLY |
