Like many pureblood families who have thus far managed to keep their blood free from a single drop of tainting blood, the Irvings were noted for their dark inclinations and pro-pureblood ideals though they never actively or directly discriminated half-bloods, half-breeds and muggleborns. They kept mostly to themselves as a family who took pride in who and what they were, preferring to diplomatically live out their days. [/style]Naturally, even though he wasn't the heir to the Irving House, Rufus was a brilliant student and a perfect British gentleman even from his earlier years. He lacked a competitive drive to compete against his older brother. While this could have been explained as a result from Rufus' natural passive nature, he also thought it was a rather pointless pursuit. After all, being the oldest, it was his brother's right to be the Head. This didn't prevent him from excelling during his days in Hogwarts as one of the most brilliant students ever to pass through their halls though. Again, it wasn't as though he was very competitive save against a small handful of other purebloods for rivalry fun, he found it was just very natural to be good at whatever he did. It was a fact he was thoroughly smug about in his days. Rufus studied the art of Animagi during his school years under the tutelage of one of his professors mainly because he was intrigued and it was something he hadn't done before. Occulmency was something he picked up from his friend's father mostly due to a bet. One of his Slytherin dormmates was complaining on how difficult it was and that he couldn't even drop it because his father was so insistent that he learn it. When Rufus made a rather brazen comment about how he should just do it instead of complaining if it was compulsory, a bet was placed that he had to pick up occulmency within the period of the summer holiday. Shrugging, he accepted. He firmly grasped the concept by two weeks and mastered it completely before the first month gave out. The time after graduation for Rufus is relatively unknown to most people. Generally, everyone expected him to take a post somewhere high in the ministry, but he didn't. News of him only resurfaced when he was twenty-one: news of his marriage to his long-time fiancee, Genevieve. It was, however, only three years after their marriage that news of their first son, Lucas Ayer Irving, was heard. Having been the second son, nothing explicitly high was expected of him by his family, per se. He was outstanding, yes, but he had no specific obligations to be so career-wise. However, it still came to as a shock when he announced that he would be taking up a teaching career at Hogwarts as its Potions Master, especially when this was announced a year after his marriage. He started teaching at twenty-two and became Head of Slytherin House at thirty-one. At Hogwarts, Rufus is known for his... eccentric ways. He openly encourages students to skip class, play pranks and generally have fun at school, much to the discontent of his peers. Even skipping potions is alright as long as the student in question does well in his subject (he is the potions master, you know). The only other time you'll see him display his bias ways is during competition for the house and quidditch cups. He's fair to all his students, regardless of age, blood and race. He's also known to most as an avid lover of tea. He is very fond of his students, second only to his family, and would do just about anything to keep them safe. He is also quite insistent on the title 'Professor' as he sees it as his due. Rufus' relationship with his son is... complicated, yet not so. He finds it amusing that his son is driven by the competitive drive that he lacked when he was a teenager. Generally, the understanding between father and son is that Rufus thinks Lucas' life is his own to live. He only asks that Lucas honors the Irving name he carries. A fact that his son has upheld brilliantly so far, in his opinion. He knows very well that his son is a talented individual but he is mostly ignorant to the full extent of Lucas' abilities, namely his Legilimency. A common misconception is that Rufus' best subject is potions for... obvious reasons. Rather, he is proficient in all forms of magic, being quite an all rounder. However, Rufus has made it subtly known that he doesn't like Herbology or Care of Magical Creatures. If, though, one were to push for a subject he excels more so in than the others, it would be Dark Arts. It's... a family trait. Unbeknownst to the majority, especially those not from pureblood families, Rufus' boggart is a result from a time when he was a child. In the middle of the night when he was nine, he woke up when he heard sounds in the house. Following them, he eventually came to his parents' room. He doesn't remember much (from trauma, he's told), but he roughly thinks the sounds were of struggle. Frozen from fear, he couldn't bring himself to go in. The next thing he remembers is seeing blood spilling from underneath the door, at which point, he fled. His parents were found dead the next morning and the culprit was never found. As you would guess, the door of his boggart is his parents' bedroom door. It's oaken and covered in floral carvings. CODED BY KIMCHI FOR SPELLBOUND ONLY |
