She is the heiress to the Irving house. Unlike most Irvings, Gwyn spent almost half her childhood away from her home country. In the care of the Matsumoto house (whose head is a close friend of her dad's) and the guidance of her mentor, Fujitsura-sensei, Gwyn spent a total of five and a half years in Japan prior to her enrolment into Hogwarts. Unbeknownst to her, this was largely due to a fall out between her father and another powerful wizard. Because of this, Gwyn is fluent in both English and Japanese. Prior to her stay in Japan, Gwyneth was schooled, as many wealthy pureblood children were, in etiquette. During her years in Japan, Gwyn was brought up with Japanese customs. After a year at Hogwarts, Gwyn has managed to recall most of the distinctions between the two customs but she does still mix them up at times. She has also been taught many cultural arts in Japan including calligraphy, chadou (the Way of the Tea), Japanese flower arrangement, as well as martial arts (she's quite adept at sword fighting and judo although she is by no means a master). She still practices them. It's her habit to get up at half three in the morning for that. Gwyn's has seen many changes during first year at Hogwarts, the most significant of all, being her increase in self-confidence and self-esteem. It's hard not to after the love and care she's been receiving from her teachers and seniors. There is still a bit of enmity between herself and her year-mates however and she remains one of their favourite targets for teasing. She is openly considerate and protective over those she becomes familiar with but it does take a while before she warms up to someone new. All in all, she prefers the company of books to other people. She's learnt a lot about herself in the past year. For instance, she's learnt that that it's a bad idea to toss a cookie into one's cauldron when brewing pepper up potion. She still enjoys experimenting in potions. Only now, she does her experimenting outside of potions class. Being the potions masters niece does give her greater access to the labs. Speaking of which, she's become rather attached to her uncle. So much so that her worst fear is a combination of disappointing him and harming killing him. She does most of her school work in his office. A cup of tea helps her to think better. Gwyn is familiar with the Elder Futrak runes and it's application in charm-work; something she picked up from one of the teachers during the last school year. She loves it, which is why she's taking Ancient Runes as an elective this year. As it is, Gwyn strives to do well in her studies. It is her ambition to win her father's acknowledgement (she still thinks the reason he sent her to Japan was because he was ashamed of her) and to one day stand as the cornerstone of the Irving house. Oh, and another thing. Gwyneth used to sport dark-coloured hair, until an unfortunate potions experiment turned her hair a light shade of platinum-lilac last summer. Her uncle would have done something about it but Gwyn decided that she preferred her new hair-colour. It made her look more Caucasian.
